Respek for some shapers

There’s not enough respek in the world. Try looking up Respek in the dictionary, you won't find it! What’s the world coming to? Well it stops here and now. At the Tyde, we’re going to give some.

This list could go on forever. Here’s are just a few happening shapers that I'd like for you to check out:

Oak Foils
Straight outta Hermosa, bitches!
During my El Porto days, you’d see some heavy South Bay guys blowing the @#$% up on his boards. Wayne Okamoto’s the real deal. Ask anyone who rides one.

Tanner
The next generation of Orange County shapers is coming of age. I know I’d dig his work when I read this off his blog: ”Yet still he prefers one with a smooth outline, a heavy glass job and one fin.” I’d love one of these too, and I’d never hold the fact that he makes an Al Knost signature board against him, really.

Grain
Maine represent, yo!
Wood surfboards – buy the kit and make it yourself, or they can do it for you too. From 12 footers to paipos, thrusters, fish, the whole nine:

see the Grain website

Look at the boards, something for everyone, and if you don’t find something you’d love to have in your quiver, you’re stupid. The northern pintail gets my pick,

Point Concepts
Ryan Lovelace makes groovy hulls, fish, stubbies, and gliders in Ventura. My buddy Ed has one and he swears by it. Hulls aren’t really my bag, but maybe it I tried one of his; I’d come away with a different point of view. Isn’t his twin keel fish clean?

Ed on his hull:

Boarddesign By Zephaniah Carrigg

Zeph is alive and well and shaping in Ventura.

While with Bing, his “IsIs” model achieved a near cult-like following.

Well listen up, spuds, he’s on his own now, and the gorgeous boards continue.

Just look at the glassing & shapes.

His Indy noserider is on my short list.

Corrections, comments, etc, please send ‘em in. Yes, I’m still chugging the Hatzikian’s Kool Aid, and yes, my ashes will be paddled out on my 777.

Didn’t make the list? I’ll be doing another sometime soon, like I said, send in the names. Still annoyed? How about a nice hot cup of lighten up?

Big up yoselves!

Out & about the past few weeks

IMG_5901.JPG

Nothing epic, but fun enough. Nice & mild temps but we're still in the big rubber. Yeah, maybe that's why I'm riding like such a stiff lately.

Rhody Afternoon Mellow

IMG_5871a.jpg
Little state with a big heart. Derby tickets sold out on Thursday (crap!), so I went when Special J egged me on to come down & surf - maybe the forecasts were bull. They were. There were some younger dudes riding heavy singlefins who were blowing the #@ck up.

Excellent to make a 2 hour drive & score.
Excellent to surf with some pretty chill guys & gals.
Excellent waves for a day that was supposed to be flat.
Excellent food & drink at my beloved Ocean Mist.

I'm so glad I got the call to come surf - thanks.

An aside - so often I pull up to surf spot but I'm too anxious to suit up & paddle out before the conditions spoil. So I pop a few perfunctory shots which short change my portfolio and you, dear readers. Do any other surfer/picture takers have this problem or do I just suck?

My nearest faraway place when I wanted to get away from the concrete & smog, then a sunset beer with the bikers at the place across the PCH. Y'all know the spot. It's even shouted out in a Beach Boys tune.

My brother Mike shot & gave these to me, Summer '01.

Malcolm McLaren 1946 – 2010

Malcolm McLaren died last week, and it’s important here at the Tyde to write up a little blurb about the man.

He was a performer, impresario, self-publicist and former manager of the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls.

In May 1977, the band released "God Save the Queen" during the week of Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. The band released their album Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols in October 1977.

In 1983, McLaren released Duck Rock, an album which mixed up influences from Africa and the Americas, including hip-hop. The album proved to be highly influential in bringing hip-hop to a wider audience in the UK. Two of the singles from the album ("Buffalo Gals" and "Double Dutch")

OK all you buffalo gals, enjoy Buffalo Gals Double Dutch. This is amazing - but we didn't get it at the time:

Early Spring Action

Surprise peelers rock. Noisy donkeys who hoot after their own rides & think back-paddling is OK don't. Spring's here and so are the morons.
A127400_017A.jpg
But cheer up, spuds: Here's Guy of Dutch Oven giving this drop in punk the Dutch Oven treatment - well done & burnt to a crisp. Revenge is a meal best served burnt.

Lastly, Cape Ann's swell, Cape Ann's great, I heart Cape Ann, OK, but it's the last place for a single 40-something, period. Boston's bright lights & hustle-bustle are always a welcome break.

Fun glass off does the trick.

Perfect weather for you and your '65 Bonneville.

Anxiety about whetever was the order of business all afternoon, but I had this corner all to myself, hooked into some solo tricky lefts. Honestly, it was more fun than it looks here. I feel fine now.

That’s the name of my big brother Mike’s photography exhibit now showing at the New England School of Photography (NESOP), where he’s an instructor.

Here's the deal - this is a collection of street shots taken from MBTA buses all hours of the day, all months of the year. Typically he's a 35mm b&w guy, but this was his first color show, revolutionary for him.

Nesop's such a cool little place, and the work these kids are putting out is supper. The gallery is just perfect - not too big not too small - nicely done everyone!
From his show:

The turnout was great, I’m very proud of and happy for him, congratulations!
