prettiest fins ever

A sweet pair of Greenough 4-A's from True Ames.

A slice of Tortola driving to go

No point really, no accident or anything like that.  Driving there is hazardous at times, but never dull.

Enjoy the ride up over the hill, with the Godfather of soul himself on the radio:

This is the vehicle, a lovely Suzuki Jimmy stuffed in the bushes:

B.V.I. 2012: Stoked Despite the Conditions

DSC00421No all-time Capoon's or Cane Garden Bay, noy by a long-shot, but if you can't enjoy yourself on Tortola, you got a problem.  Conditions never got better than waist-chest, but even visiting Hawaiians were amazed by the water, lack of vibe, and geat people. "What's that? It's mild, clean and head high back home - wha - you're braking up on me I didn't quite get that - damn AT&T". Straight out of a storybook. The SUP world Tour was in town, waiting for good conditions for a contest. Great crew of folks, and they rip these tiny SUP's I dont think I could even surf. I mean rip! Dudes from Hawaii, Australia, Brazil, France, and US&A. But Meeting the good folks down there; playing some dominoes and pigging out at a full-on Wast Indies pig roast will go in the fond memory vault. DSC00396 One must place the dominoes own with a decisive CLACK! on the table. Rush hour Capoon's Bay style: DSC00437 Josiah's Bay from Naomi's Little Secret Bar, then the horrific news of the shooting came over the BBC - staff, tourists alike deeply saddened.
DSC00391 A longboard was the way to go, thanks Jet Blue - no dings, no problems, for $52. AND, thanks to Johnny O' it's staying down there, so no hauling the thing back - huge bonus! DSC00412 DSC00360 More soon, we have waves on the way here.

Channin Shakedown - fun pre-voyage board familiarization

Here's the deal - this is a friend's board, he's down in Tortola. I bring it, use it, & leave it. Period. - no schleppin' back after a long trip, no getting hosed on destroyed rentals when Cane is pumping!

This paddles and turns nicely, this will work unless it gets too big and I'll eat kaka on a 9'6" singlefin.

rocket rides & random bomber flyby at dusk

A short session but the best surfing personally since September. And happy Thanksgiving!
_MG_1671 _MG_1664 _MG_1676
And plus, out of the clearing clouds, like a scene from a movie a WWII bomber emerged from the mist low slow and loud just amazing. Ghost plane?

Musclecar Monday: Plymouth: More Barracudas, less Rocks

Plymouths again are the thing since it's Thanksgiving, you know Plymouth Pilgrims, etc. - feast on these:

Tail-end of Sandy Provides Silver Lining of Sorts

A few from Saturday. It was flat by Sunday, almost a week after the storm hit. It's hard to get all stoked on a swell from a storm that hurt a lot of people. But I'll get off my high horse because I suited up and paddled out. _MG_1629 _MG_1644

Sandy Carnage - Hang in there Garden State

After seeing this I can't stop thinking about NJ, and the good folks I met passing though there. Hoping the best, but this is awful! It's easy for me to say, we dodged the brunt of it by far up here: hang in there, you're New Jersey after all!

wonkiness?

Glassy, shoulder high, and a little overhead on the sets.
DSC00305
Lifting fog, 70°, 58° water temp – life is good. Until I paddle out. Despite the ideal coinditions the waves were nearly impossible to catch. You know the ones: they don’t want to break until way inside, and at that point any drop is a trapdoor into a closeout. Did I mention that punching through the whitewater would have you winded, gasping for air by the time you finally reached the lineup. A local described the waves as “wonky”.

Non-surfers: surfing sucks don’t take it up!
DSC00296
Despite my bitching I still look back at Saturday’s session with the warm & fuzzies – don’t ask why, it must have been the amazing light, and the gorgeous fall color. Still sore!

Water Hog

What's this? Somthing shorter than 9'? A Surftech? Thruster setup? What the **** is the world coming to? I suck at it so far, but I like it. The goal is to have this be a travel board or something for when the surf was like yesterday, fast & sectiony. This is a 7'2" Merrick Water Hog, and I got it a month ago from the fine folks at Island Sport in Middletown RI (can never go wrong there). My work is cut out for me, but I'll give it a go, so stay tuned!

Musclecar Monday: 1970 Plymouth Superbird

The Plymouth Superbird was a highly modified version of a Road Runner with well known graphics and horn. Developed specifically for NASCAR racing, the Superbird was Plymouth's follow-on design to the Charger Daytona raced by Dodge the year before. (See earlier post)

The car's primary rival was the Ford Torino Talladega, itself a direct response to the Mopar aero car. Both of the Mopar "aero cars" had aerodynamic nosecones, wings and, in the case of the Superbird, a horn which mimicked the Road Runner cartoon character.

The Superbird's styling was too extreme for 1970, and many sat unsold on the back lots of dealerships as late as '72. Some were converted "back" into 1970 Road Runners to move them off the lot. Recently Superbirds have become valuable; at auction, bids for original Superbirds go above $1.2m.

The teeming autumn, big with rich increase

_MG_1593_MG_1579
Long period growndswell (4’ @ 11 sec.), cloudless skies, and strong (but now too strong) offshores more than offset the teeming crowds.
